About Us

The Institute of Eating Management (IEM) was opened in 1990 under the direction of nutritionist Keith Klein CN, CCN, a pioneer in the field of nutrition and weight loss.

The concept behind IEM is simple:  to combine several multi-disciplinary approaches in order to help people overcome the obstacles often associated with weight loss.  This multi-disciplinary approach also covers those clients with a wide range of special nutritional needs, such as those suffering from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and eating disorders.

Keith’s vision for IEM was directed by three main influences:

MEDICINE
Keith served as the Dietetic Director at the Institute of Specialized Medicine for several years during the late 70’s and early 80’s.  During his tenure, he recognized the important role that nutrition and exercise could play in restoring a person's health.  Patients that incorporated sound nutritional advice, in conjunction with medical modalities, improved much faster and felt better than those who relied solely on conventional medicine therapies.  In various cases, the doctors opted to use nutrition and exercise before medicating their patients. The results were overwhelmingly positive.

IEM currently works very closely with many of Houston's finest physicians. They have referred many of their own patients to IEM because they trust the care and advice that IEM offers their clients.

PSYCHOLOGY
It was while working with psychiatrist Dr. John H. Simms in the mid ‘80s that Keith conceived his ground-breaking work that he later called “The Psychology of Eating Management. “ By utilizing skills once thought to be specific only to psychologists and psychiatrists, he has successfully helped a number of people reach their fitness and life goals.

At IEM, we don't psychoanalyze our clients. However, we do understand the connection between eating behaviors and the mind. Our job is to point out to the client the connections between defective thoughts regarding food and behavior that often thwart one’s ability to lose weight.  Together, we then find ways to replace this defective thinking with positive, self-directing thoughts.

SPORTS NUTRITION
As the previous co-owner of the Houston Sports Medicine Clinic, Keith definitely understands the importance of proper nutrition and nutrient timing when it comes to achieving optimum levels of athletic performance.  As a result, they have honed their techniques to work for a wide array of athletes.

We are proud to have worked with many of the following:
◾  Houston Rockets
◾  Houston Comets
◾  Houston Aeros Hockey Team
◾  Olympic Gold Medalists
◾  Olympic Sprinters
◾  Professional Bodybuilders - There is no other entity in Texas that has produced more winners than IEM.

Experience.  Knowledge.  Passion.  Results.  These are the traits that Keith and his team at IEM have brought to their clients since the 1980s.  Whether you desire weight loss, improved health, or increased sports performance, be sure to turn to IEM to help you reach your goals.
