Kim Porterfield truly changed our lives. When we hired her in our late twenties, my husband had just been diagnosed with high blood pressure. He had a long commute for work and didn't have great eating habits. We worked out five days a week but weren't seeing the results we wanted. When his doctor tried to give him medicine for high blood pressure, he refused. I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life, tried every diet from weight watchers to Keto, name a diet and I’ve probably tried it. One thing that all these diets had in common is that they just did not work for me. They were temporary solutions, but they were not realistic lifestyle changes. I needed something that was sustainable
and not a temporary fix, I needed something that would get me off the diet roller coaster once and for all. “In my quest for help, I found a nutritionist that was willing to help me achieve my goals, the approach that was taken was to cut carbs out of my diet completely and have me on a very low-calorie diet. Hi, my name is Maggie and before I started working with Kim Porterfield, I was 45 pounds heavier, depressed and riddled with anxiety. At the time I was struggling with an eating disorder and had no idea how to lose weight without restricting/bingeing/purging. I was introduced to Kim by a former boyfriend as a last-ditch effort to lose weight, get healthy and hopefully regain an ounce of self-esteem. At first, I was resistant, as I believed for so long that the more you ate the more you gained weight! I couldn’t believe at that time that if I ate cleanly and frequently that I would see results. Eventually, however I decided to let go and relinquish control.

I appeared at the Institute of Eating Management with a dream of facing my 40th birthday in “Speedo Shape” for my Ron Burgundy themed birthday party. I had gone through the typical diet and cardio methods without any success for years. Lost some weight, gained it all back, and added a few pounds each time. A lot of people ask who I use as a coach. Kim Porterfield is my nutritionist and coach! She’s also a mentor and after 11 years, also a dear friend. However, she is always “the boss” when it comes to getting ready for my season and coming out of it.
Last year she brought me through one of the most successful seasons of my whole fitness career. Me being me, I surprised her one day by saying I decided I wanted to adopt a plant-based diet. My drive to understand the true function of food/nutrition in the body began in 2011. For two years, I participated as a figure competitor in the OCB. While I was successful on the stage both years, I found that the style of prep my coach used left me feeling weak, fatigued, and overly moody. I also experienced a shocking thirty-pound rebound shortly after my first set of shows. As a result, not only did I struggle to get lean the following year, my coach used more extreme methods to get me stage ready.
It was after this second difficult prep that I felt there had to be a better way to get ready for the stage. I decided I needed to take my health into my own hands and truly understand how food fueled the body! I started by pursuing my certification as a NASM Fitness Nutrition Specialist (FNS). What I learned during my studies disturbed me, as I discovered the way I’d been fed during the two years of prep could have had detrimental effects to my metabolism. I became determined to prove one could get lean without using the extreme measures once practiced on me! So, I took the plunge and hired Kim. My husband had discovered Kim after having read and used the methods outlined in the book Get Lean by Lee Labrada and Keith Klein, CN, CCN (owner of IEM). His results with Kim were nothing less than outstanding, and I still kick myself to this day that I didn’t use her from the get-go! Anyway, live and learn! I decided to place my faith in Kim as well and naturally, I was not disappointed. For my final figure competition, I stepped on stage looking and feeling my best! I came in second in my category, but the truth is, I really came in first: I walked away with both my physical and mental health intact and that is more important than any trophy! I was so impressed and inspired by Kim’s knowledge and genuine concern for the health of her clients that I was determined to thank Kim in person. So, my husband and I flew to Houston to meet Kim and Keith and it was from that first meeting with them that I knew what path I wanted my career to take: I wanted to become a nutritionist, too. I began seeing Kim Porterfield CN for my nutrition. I knew of several people that use her and they have all been successful with their goals of weight loss, muscle building etc.
As a fitness competitor, I was tired of the typical "bodybuilder's diet" that coaches put ALL their clients on. I was also tired of the yo-yo dieting, which I have been doing most of my life. With Kim's guidance, I lost almost 30 pounds in 7 months! The weight loss built my self-confidence, so I was able to market myself as a fitness model and public figure. I landed a few photo shoots, including one with a large supplement company. I learned so much from Kim and myself during this time. Kim not only cares about my nutrition, she also makes sure my mind is right too. This is extremely important to me, because a lot of coaches push their clients' emotional baggage under the rug. I'm not going to lie and say that every check-in has been perfect. There have been times I didn't want to walk through the IEM office door, but I did. Even if my check-in wasn't good, never have I felt discouragement from Kim. If anything, after every visit I walk away with something that I've learned, as well as fire to my motivation. Meeting Kim has been a true blessing. She is a coach, a friend, and a truly genuine person. Kim has taken the time to personally get to know me and to find a plan that has put me toward achieving my weight loss and strength goals which I previously thought were impossible. I now have a sustainable plan and keep the results without feeling like I'm sacrificing anything or worrying I will fall back into my bad habits. I first met Kim around 2011 when I was a senior in high school. I was about to join the Army, so I wanted to get in the best shape as possible. At the time, I had very low self-esteem and wasn’t happy with the way I looked, but more importantly I wasn’t happy with the way I felt. Enter Kim! When I was in Houston, I would meet with her every 4 to 6 weeks. She taught me how to eat and explained what exercises I should do to build healthy muscle and lose fat. At the time I thought I could learn healthy habits just by doing a quick google search. However, I highly recommend meeting with Kim because she is a professional, she practices what she preaches, and she is genuinely a nice person who was such a pleasure to work with.
Fast forward a few years when I was in college, and I lost my healthy eating habits. I lived in barracks/dorm and I was only able to eat out of a cafeteria. When I was 20 years old (2005 or 2006), a friend from high school was sharing her Figure competition picture, and I was like how can I look like that?! Enter, Kim Porterfield.
I was so broke, but I decided to book an appointment anyway. I saw her twice and then disappeared because I didn’t have the money to keep seeing her at the time. I struggled for the rest of my 20s with my weight. I’m 5’8 and at my heaviest I weighed 235 pounds. There were several physique competitors that I admired that were Kim's clients. Her name kept popping up. So, I started seeing Kim religiously. That’s when the magic started to happen. I was able to get smaller than I had ever been, but more importantly, fit and healthy at 17% body fat. Fast forward a few years and a couple of babies, using the principles she teaches at the Institute of Eating Management, I’ve been able to shape up after each pregnancy. I have to say that my journey has brought me a long way. Not only physically but mentally! I can't imagine reverting back to my old lifestyle. Nothing feels better than FIT feels... The first picture on the far left was taken when I started working with my nutritionist Kim Porterfield CN. I was 152 lbs at 28.5% body fat!!!! The middle pic was taken 10 months later, and I was 132 lbs at 12% body fat, which was my leanest.

"My name is Roslyn. I have been athletic since I was a kid. I never worried about my weight until my late 20s. Then it seemed like I went from 125 to 150 overnight. I had stopped being active and was working a lot. At work I wore scrub uniforms, so I never noticed the weight gain.
